On Rúa Longa, where the old town of Padrón smells of wet stone and freshly landed shellfish, there are tables set out on the stone and a black sign in white script. That sign is Don Pepe Original: café, octopus house and dining room on the Camino de Santiago.
Nobody comes here in a hurry. You come for steaming caldo gallego, for local raxo and zorza, for rice for two that reaches the table still bubbling, and for a churrasco feast that ends, as tradition demands, with a shot of orujo.
The pilgrims put it better than we can: “The best food of the entire Camino Santiago walk.” And if it rains — in Galicia it rains — all the better: the covered terrace, the cold glass and the hum of the bar do the rest.
